Cutting Recess to Make Time for More Instruction? The Research Says That Backfires

I've sat in the meetings. Test scores are down, the pacing guide is tight, and someone floats the idea: what if we trimmed recess by ten minutes and used that time for more direct instruction? It sounds logical. More minutes on task should mean more learning, right?

No. The research says the opposite.

Brief, frequent play breaks improve focus — not just mood

Across a range of studies, one finding shows up again and again: students who get frequent, brief opportunities for free play pay better attention to academic tasks once they're back in their seats (Kesslak, Patrick, So, Cotman, & Gomez-Pinilla, 1998; Bjorklund & Pellegrini, 2000; Pellegrini & Holmes, 2006; Stevenson & Lee, 1990). Not despite the play breaks — because of them.

This isn't a minor effect we're squinting to see. It shows up consistently enough that entire school systems have restructured their days around it.

What Finland — and now some U.S. schools — are doing about it

In Finland, students get recess roughly seven times a day: fifteen minutes of outdoor play, every hour, with minimal teacher interruption. It's genuinely a different rhythm than most American school days, which tend to front-load instruction and treat recess as a single reward at the end of a long stretch of sitting.

A handful of U.S. schools have piloted a similar model through the LiiNK Project at Texas Christian University, and the early results are worth paying attention to: better focus, fewer behavior referrals, and — notably — no loss in academic achievement, even with less seat time. If you're curious what this could look like in an American public school, it's worth a look.

Play also makes room for productive failure

There's a second mechanism at work here, separate from attention: play lets us fail without high stakes. Try something, watch it not work, adjust, try again — all without a grade attached (Fordyce & Wehner, 1993). That low-stakes, trial-and-error loop builds the same cognitive muscle we're trying to strengthen with word problems and lab experiments. Students who get more practice with it during play bring more resilience to it during academic work.

Three ways to try this without blowing up our schedule

We don't need a Finnish-style overhaul to put this into practice. Here are a few low-lift starting points:

1. Split one long instructional block into two, with a five-minute movement break in between.

Same total content, better attention for the second half.

2. Give early finishers a genuine play option

— not more worksheets — while classmates finish up.

3. Open class with ninety seconds of playful movement

before diving into new material, to reset attention before we need it most.

More play breaks doesn’t mean less learning time. These playful opportunities are how the brain resets so it can actually do the learning we're asking of it. If anything, protecting play is one of the most evidence-based moves we can make for the instructional minutes we do have.
